Noisy bass keys

Post by JulesMartin »

Hi, I am restoring a Firotti 12 bass after finding it in the loft a month or so back. I've replaced the bass buttons which crumbled to dust on pushing them and unstuck a couple of keys. It sort of works now although the tuning is way off but the bass buttons are very noisy almost like wood on wood. Inside, the buttons move levers that lift and close wooden blocks which have felt pads to cover three holes for each pad. I guess after 30+ years of not being played the pads have become hard. My question is what can I use to replace them. I have an old leather jacket which I could cut up to make pads would this have been what the original pads were made of, or what other material could I use. As always your help advice and support is much appreciated
